Word Work
We will be using a phonics-based language program called Fundations. First graders will learn spelling and phonics concepts such as long and short vowel sounds, blends and digraphs, bonus letters, vowel teams, and suffixes. See our links for more information about Fundations.
We'll also be working on learning sight words. Sight Words are high-frequency words that students need to be able to recognize and read, but not necessarily spell at this time. They often break "spelling rules," and sometimes contain "tricks." (For example, "and" is a trick word because the "an" is a nasal sound and we don't hear the regular short a sound at all.) We'll be practicing these at reading time and encourage you to practice at home as well. These words get harder as the weeks progress!

Fundations Skill
We assess these skills with our Word Work quiz each Friday. You'll see a score out of 5 for our current skills, as well as a dictated sentence at the end. |
May-JuneCVe words, or "consonant, vowel, "e" words, are words with a long vowel and an "e" at the end. We often call this, "magic e," because it makes the vowel say its name.

Practice at home by making flash cards and doing quick drills.
The goal with these words is to read and write them fluently! These are all high frequency words that students need to be able to recognize by sight. Many contain "tricks" that don't follow typical spelling patterns, or aren't spelled the way they sound. |
