This is my forty-first year of teaching, and my third year here at Champlain School with Rebecca. I feel lucky to job-share with Rebecca and work with the children and families at Champlain. The other part of my job is the district literacy teacher. I travel to all the elementary schools and provide professional development in the area of reading and writing to teachers and staff in the elementary grades.
I did my undergraduate and graduate work at UVM with luminaries like Dr. Hunt, Marge Lipson, Charlie Rathbone, and Frank Watson. I’ve taught every elementary grade except Kindergarten and third grade, and spent many years as an adjunct, teaching in the Saint Michael’s graduate program. I currently teach writing courses with the Vermont Writing Collaborative at the end of June. I’m passionate about teaching reading and writing to young children, and one of my favorite things is meeting with my writer’s group one Saturday a month.
I grew up in Ithaca, New York, and my mother, brother and sister-in-law are still living there. I went to UVM and never left after college. I enjoy baking, reading on our screened-in porch, and eating my husband's Italian cooking.

This is my 9th year teaching, and 7th year teaching first grade at Champlain. I previously taught 5th grade and a 3/4 multi-age at CP Smith but always knew I wanted to work in the primary grades. Nurturing our students' love of reading is one of the most rewarding parts of this job!
This year I am leading a district-wide pilot team of First Grade, Special Ed, Guidance, and ELL teachers to develop a Culturally Responsive Social Studies Curriculum for grade 1. Having recently completed my thesis on this topic, I am thrilled to be able to help develop this resource K-3 over the next few years. As a member of BSD's new Equity Council, I will be focusing on professional development and curriculum through the lens of cultural competence.
My husband, James and I are the very proud parents of Will, now 2 1/2, and Baby Reed, almost 1! Adorable pictures below :)
I grew up in Duxbury, Massachusetts with my mom, whom I now realize was nothing short of a superhero my whole childhood, and my sister, Jessica. I love teaching first grade. I also enjoy language learning, hip hop dance, yoga, snowboarding, painting, cooking, and reading. I love being a mom, and I feel so lucky to have my two amazing boys. I'm passionate about integrating more technology and arts into my teaching, and excited to be entering another year with such a dynamic group of students.
Mrs. Haslam teaches Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
